Luminous Brids

DMX lighting software design for the artist Kathy Hinde.

A flock of origami birds are suspended over a shopping street, each with an LED inside. As night falls the lighting creates the effect of birds flying along the street. The birds are arranged in rows, and each bird has its wings positioned at the next stage of flight within the row – aiming to create the impression of stop motion animation as each bird is illuminated in turn. The software can be adapted to change the speed how the lighting travels along the row of birds, the amount of ‘trail’ effect by adjusting the fade in and fade out of the lights. All the parameters can be set to various degrees of randomness so the patters never repeat.
