Matthew Olden has been a computer artist since 1996. He makes a wide range of computer programs that make music, do visuals and manipulate data.
Matthew started to design and build his own generative software audio-visual engine, i am the mighty jungulator , described as ‘the sonic philosopher’s stone’ by Future Music magazine. 20 years down the line Matthew still is developing generative software updating and refining his original vision. Matthew, with his band, won best new electronic act at the 2004 Diesel New Music Awards, with 3 (unbeknown to the judges) generative pieces of music.
Matthew makes music, under the many names, i am the mighty jungulator being one of them. He is also friends with Fancy Cat. He distributes his music willy-nilly via the internet, he still can’t work out why his music is on Spotify, he never gave them permission and no one answers his emails to find out why. Amazon also sells pirated t-shirts of his LP covers.
Matthew has been funded by the PRS twice to put on the site specific Voyage In To The Unknowns. Some other good gigs Matthew has got include Cold War Late, V+A museum, Fete dʼEurope, Bordeaux , Etherfest, South Bank Centre, London , Late at the Tate, Tate Britain, London, Bath International Music Festival, Cut and Splice Festival, ICA London, and played with Kathy Hinde’s Piano Migrations all over the world.
He also provide live visuals for various artists notably Langham Research Centre , and Tap Sew
In 2010 Matthew completed one of his favourites residencies at Knowle West Media Centre, Bristol, where he developed self generative computer personalities that make audio visual compositions and argue with the user, called Making Friends and Enemies. Matthew later used this research to make generative personality tools for a UWE research project The Productive Marginals (2014). Matthew continues to develop these systems and has a few at home as friends. Bubble Sort, Fist Of God, and the Beatless, being a few of many. Since June 2018 his programs have been streaming their art regularly on the internet.
Matthew has worked a lot with multi speaker systems, he ‘re-imagined’ Shostakovich’s 6th Symphony in octaphonic sound with The Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Askenazy (2005). As a featured artist Featured artist in Powerplant, Liverpool (Nov 08) Matthew, with Jony Easterby started to develop a large multi speaker system integrated with bespoke software. For Jony Easterby’s production Tree and wood (2017) Matthew has been perfecting the Octophonic system and uses it to provide music for the show. additionally he uses the system as a sound installation with live performances at Nuitblanche Brussels (sept 2019) and Festival de la Camargue et du Delta du Rhône (April 2019) the Camargue show introduced Matthew to Ferdinand Derousen who provides breathtakingly beautiful wildlife recordings for Matthew to use in the system.
For the Cryptic show Below The Blanket (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh July 2019) Matthew contributed a large scale sound installation using scientific data to produce a multi-speaker sound scape of the Flow Country. It was nominated 2020 Scottish Awards for New Music.
Together with Kathy Hinde, Matthew is resident composer for Sadhana Dance. In the last ten years they have produced 5 nationally touring shows.
For Dr Brendon Walker of Studio Go Go, Matthew has provided the sound tracks for many of his projects including The Experiment (2011), and the large scale virtual fairground ride Neurosis (NESTA Futurefest 2015). and developed techniques and composed audio for virtual reality systems and bespoke lighting systems, most notably for Keaton Henson ,( Six Lethargies, Barbican,UK 2018)
Matthew also made his mum and dad proud when he had a 15 second long piece of music on Wildlife On One, presented by David Attenborough, “Geckos, Space Age Lizard”
In 2018 Matthew presented a series of workshops for the Anti University Program , run by BEEF in the Max/Msp programming environment.
Currently Matthew is composing music for a forthcoming film, Dawn of the Dark Fox by Michael smith. And developing “some other bits of software”
